May 11th 2020    News Twitter     With Comments Off on Bono compares Billie Eilish to Roy Orbinson on Songs That Saved My Life playlist  Share:

Bono is celebrating his 60th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, the U2 frontman has shared a playlist called ’60 Songs That Saved My Life’.

These are some of the songs that saved my life,’ Bono shared of the playlist. “The ones I couldn’t have lived without… the ones that got me from there to here, zero to 60… through all the scrapes, all manner of nuisance, from the serious to the silly… and the joy, mostly joy.’”

The playlist features tracks by a bunch of the most iconic musicians in history, like the Beatles, Patti Smith, Kanye West, Daft Punk, David Bowie, Nirvana, Massive Attack, Iggy Pop, Arcade Fire, Jay Z, Kraftwerk, Public Enemy, and more. Bono also gave a nod to dark pop wunderkind Billie Eilish and her brother and co-conspirator, FINNEAS.

In accompaniment to the playlist, Bono took the time to write a letter to each artist behind the music. In an Instagram post, Bono sung the praises of Eilish’s WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? track ‘everything i wanted’.

Dear Billie (Finneas too), he wrote.

My ears long for such empty spaces to wander… to sneak away from the density of digital surfaces with too much information… I step inside your song and it’s a black beauty, achingly awesomely vulnerable and terrifying, fearless and worrisome… but you are not worried by all that. You express it so you can own the feeling that nags.

I think of Carole King. I think of Roy Orbison.

But just like them, this never existed before you did.

Your fan,

Bono.

To be compared to songwriting greats Carole King and Roy Orbinson is nothing to sneeze at.
