Popstar Billie Eilish recently revealed she didn’t know of the band Van Halen, and naturally, people have reacted to that fact. While making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last month, Kimmel compared himself to the 17-year-old singer, readily admitting he wasn’t nearly as successful at that age. He did comfort himself by explaining he was 17 in 1984 — or as he called it, “perhaps the greatest year in American history.”

The “Bad Guy” singer prodded back about the host’s current age, to which Kimmel replied, “Do you know who Madonna is?”

While Eilish said she knew who The Material Girl was, she did that there was a lot from that era that she was unaware of, including Cabbage Patch Kids and Run DMC. However, it was the Van Halen comment that really got people talking. First, the rock fans who seemed disheartened by the revelation.

“My take: you should definitely know who Van Halen is even if you’re 17,” one fan wrote.

A second wrote, “I know u guys think that this is ok and I get it but…cmon girl it’s VAN HALEN.”

A third wrote, “Billie Eilish doesn’t know who Van Halen is. Get off my lawn!”

However, not everyone was so quick to pile on Eilish, who will turn 18 later this month, for not knowing a band that was formed 30 years prior. And, to be fair, have only put out one album in her lifetime, 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth.

“Who cares if a teenager doesn’t know the music you knew when you were a teen?” one fan wrote. “Introduce them! Y’all didn’t come onto this earth knowing all the stuff you know now either. Doesn’t matter when they meet the good stuff. Shut up and play it for them.”

A second wrote, “I say this as a superfan: Van Halen has given Billie Eilish no reason to know who they are. They’ve done very little during her lifetime. Don’t complain about other people’s musical experience being different. Instead, share — give people a reason to love what you love.”

Another wrote, “Now I feel bad being a 24 yr old male and not knowing who Van Halen is.”

Interestingly, one of Eilish’s most visible defenders (aside from ’90s rockers Smashmouth), came from Wolfgang Van Halen, the band’s current bassist and son of founding member/guitarist/band namesake Eddie Van Halen.

After her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Eilish got some flack online after a video surfaced that seemed to show her ignoring some fans after the taping. In the wake of the fallout, Eilish posted her reaction where she attempted to clarify the situation while ardently disputing the claim that she was ignoring her fans.

Spotify released its streaming numbers for the decade Tuesday in its inaugural edition of “Wrapped,” a new year-end look at the music service’s most-streamed artists and albums. Spotify’s 113 million subscribers will also be able to view their personalized streaming statistics soon.

Grammy Award-winning singer Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend, Drake, was Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the decade, with more than 28 billion streams. He’s followed by Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Eminem. With 6.5 billion streams in 2019, Post Malone was the most-streamed artist of the year. In second and third place were Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande.

The most streamed track of the decade was Sheeran’s Shape of You, which accounted for 2.3 billion Spotify streams, while Camila Cabello’s Señorita surpassed 1 billion streams as the most-streamed track of 2019.

Podcast listenership at Spotify grew by 50% in 2019, the company said in a release, with more than 500,000 titles now available on the platform. The most streamed podcast of 2019 was The Joe Budden Podcast with Rory and Mal.

Spotify’s full report on the most-streamed artists, tracks and albums of the decade is available for download in PDF format.

In just two years, Billie Eilish has managed to become one of the biggest artists in the world. Vanity Fair tracked Billie’s success over two years by having her sit down for a series of interviews between 2017 and 2019 and the numbers speak for themselves. In 2017, when Billie sat down for her first interview with the outlet, she had just 257,000 Instagram followers. Now, she has more than 40 million and Billie said she’s getting used to the attention. But that doesn’t mean she’s here for the haters.

In the third installment to the series, Billie sent a message to people who claim that she whispers in all of her songs. She thinks they’re wrong.

“People think that I whisper in all of my songs,” she said. “I do in a couple of songs. But, I feel like people just say that when they’ve heard one f*cking song. Like, listen to ‘Wish You Were Gay’. A b*tch belting. And like, my belt is not even close to a f*cking Adele belt. Adele is like a literal God. But, it’s just different. You don’t have to be shouting to be good at singing.”

Despite the few critics, Billie also said she’s surprised by the amount of success she’s experienced over the past year.

“Back then I thought it was the biggest I was ever gonna be, and I thought it was the most I was ever gonna be recognized, and it was the most anyone was gonna know me. It was the most money that I would have, the most clothes I’d have, the most shoes that I’d have, and what’s crazy [is] it wasn’t.”

And now she admits she finally feels happy. “The most important thing right now probably would be maintaining my happiness, which I’ve been experiencing for the first time in many years lately,” she told Vanity Fair.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! must have an excellent child-casting service. Whenever they need to have kids react to Star Wars toys or have their Halloween candy taken away, they find the cutest little nuggets. And when they need a child to talk to Billie Eilish about how Pennywise the Dancing Clown is drinking a grandmother on her head, well, they can find that kid, too. Billie Eilish asked kids where they go when they sleep, and their answers ranged from the horrifying to the adorable. If Tiffany Haddish ever gets tired of hosting everything, she can give Kids Say the Darndest Things to Eilish. It’ll be in good hands.

A Billie Eilish fan was left disappointed this week when he learned that the singer had donated a jacket he gave her during a meet and greet to charity.

Fortunately, he wasn’t down about it for long.

Michigan-based Donnie Gloede learned that the Bad Guy hitmaker had parted ways with the brightly-coloured coat he gifted her when Twitter user @arrrrrleth took to social media to share that their relative had bought it in a shop on the West Coast.

“So I was in LA, thrift shopping with my cousin and we decided to check out this new thrift shop instead of going to the same ones we always go to,” they explained. “My cousin found a jacket and decided to buy it. Inside of it was a note.”

They then shared a photo of the sweet hand-written note, which read: “Stay warm, Billie! [Love] Donnie,” and signed off with Gloede’s Twitter and Instagram handle.

“I found the guys Instagram and there’s a pic of him giving the jacket to Billie,” Arleth continued. “He gave.. this jacket… TO BILLIE EILISH.”

Gloede responded to the tweet, saying: “O that’s me!!! @billieeilish I’m sad to see the jacket never kept you warm.”

Feeling bad, Arleth tagged Eilish and begged her to give Gloede concert tickets to “make it up to him” before reassuring him that the jacket is keeping its new owner warm instead.

Later, Gloede took to Instagram to share a news report on “Jacket Gate” and confirm that he has no ill-feeling towards the musician.

“I need you all to know that I’m not pressed and I love you @billieeilish,” he wrote. “Imagine how massive her closets would have to be if she kept every single thing every fan gave her!”
